My mother had been using BMO Harris bank for a while and told me how great they were. Having just gotten a new job, I knew a new bank account would help and didn't mind having to pay a $12 service charge every month until my checks started coming in if it was a bank my mother claimed to be worth it.

After 3 months, and $36 of my own cash going into supporting this company, I actually come to my first situation where I need assistance... and get absolutely none. Basically, my checks hadn't started coming in yet and my bank account was EXTREMELY dry at the time. However, there was something I needed to purchase online for about $8.

I knew I only had about $6 in my account, so through PayPal I meant to choose to pay with a prepaid card that I knew had at least $20 on it. However, I accidentally chose my debit card, the one I have through BMO Harris. I started panicking, and since I had no cash to deposit into my account at the time, I decided to just drive a good 25-30 minutes out of my way to get to the nearest BMO Harris bank branch (I recently moved so there wasn't one close to me like there was in the place I used to live). I ended up explaining to the teller what had happened, and asked if there was any way he could block the incoming debit from deducting the funds from my account.

He told me he "absolutely could." After about 3 minutes of random clicking and typing on his keyboard, he told me everything was settled and that there was no further action required on my part. I thanked him and left. Upon getting back home, I decided to check PayPal and assumed I'd see a negative balance of $8 or some message asking me to choose a new payment method. However, I did not.

So, I went to check my BMO Harris bank account... and guess what? A total balance of -$1.83, and the $8 payment went through. At that point, my mother needed to use the car so I wasn't able to go back out to the bank.

Instead I gave them a call, remembering the teller's name and everything. I asked for him, and after being on hold for about 2 minutes, the call was hung up. I assumed he did that because he knew he was in some deep ***. So this time, I called and used a fake voice and a fake name asking for him.

He picked up, and I told him who I really was and about 3 words into telling him why I was calling, got hung up on again. Luckily I was recording all of the calls to try to report him to corporate for this, and for the most part I wasn't worried because the policy behind BMO's banking is that they only charge fees if your account goes overdrawn by over $5. Or, at least that's what I thought. However, I still get an NSF Fee of $35 the next day, and after contacting customer service about it, get some *** response of "sorry, that only applies after all items have been posted on your account.

We reserve the right to deny any incoming charges." Are you kidding me right now? What's worse: PayPal didn't get the memo, and attempted to continue charging me, despite the 4 support tickets I sent to PayPal's inept customer service. I ended up with $174 in bank fees over this tiny little $2 mishap that I was TOLD by a teller would be taken care of. I literally could've just asked my mom to loan me a $5 bill and deposited it into the bank if I knew it wouldn't have been taken care of.

I ended up calling customer service after a while and was told that about $60 of my fees couldn't be reversed and needed to be paid. I was glad that I didn't need to shell out an entire fraction of my paycheck for absolutely nothing but I was still absolutely enraged by the fact that I was being told to pay $60 for a problem caused solely by the BMO Harris bank company. Even after submitting the calls of the bank teller hanging up on me twice, I was told I didn't have "sufficient evidence that the teller made promises that he was unable to keep." Haha, don't make me laugh. I'm sure there's been other complaints about this guy before too and it makes me question why he hasn't been fired yet...

maybe he's being trained to do these things. Regardless, BMO Harris made me go through a ton of unnecessary ***, a ton of stress, unnecessary drives, unnecessary phone calls, and still made me give them $60 for all of it just over a tiny little $2 overdraft that a teller lied to me and said was taken care of.

If you have ANY other choice, and I mean literally ANY, GO FOR IT. Don't do business with BMO Harris, you will indeed regret it.

Reason of review: Poor customer service.

Monetary Loss: $60.

Preferred solution: Let the company propose a solution.

BMO Harris Bank Cons: Customer service, Business practices, Being so obviously lied to from customer service, Account fees, Unprofessional behavior.
